Taking older vehicles off the roads has been a big goal for the government. Who wish to use vehicle scrapping as a tool to reduce our emission.
Older vehicles are known to pollute more than new cars. As their engines become less efficient over time, and also require a lot more maintenance.
This is why some time ago, the government announced that all old vehicles would be scrapped. The age for scrapping was set at 15 years for petrol vehicles. While diesel vehicles were given an even shorter lifespan of just 10 years.
This rule has so far only been implemented in the NCR region. With other states claiming that they will join the program once the infrastructure is in place.
Vehicle recycling infrastructure has been a main hurdle in the implementation of this scheme. As the system requires adherence of specific international practices for dismantling vehicles. Without creating extra waste or pollution in the process.
This means the use of special machinery, as well as specifically trained staff to handle them. A good example of such a facility is the recently launched ‘Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu India Private Limited’.
This is the name of the joint venture between India’s Maruti Suzuki, and Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Group. These two corporations have agreed to jointly operate India’s first government approved ELV Scrapping and Recycling Unit.
This unit was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari. Mr. Satoshi Suzuki, the Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Japan, India joined him for this inaugural event.
This facility was created to act as an end-to-end solution for scrapping vehicles in an environmentally friendly way. The facility is located in Noida, and the companies spent over ₹44 crore to build it.
It covers over 10,993 sq.m and has the capacity to recycle 24,000 units per year. This is the first step towards adapting the vision of AtmaNirbhar Bharat, as all the equipment being used in the facility was also made in India.
The new company has a separate website and call centre to handle customers. Who can directly send their vehicles for recycling, or go through their local dealerships for the same.
The vehicles are then transported to this facility where they are thoroughly inspected before processing.
The processing begins by taking out all the liquids and live equipment. Including the different types of oils and lubricants, airbags, batteries, and more. This is done to ensure the car is de-polluted and produces zero discharge.
Main Principles That Govern Waste Management Policy
Following that all the usable materials and components are taken out. Including the seats, tires, windshields, windows, suspension, engine and other valuable parts.
The empty shell can then be compressed into an ELV bale. That can be sold to steel mills and smelters.
This way, this facility can take care of all parts of vehicle scrappage in one location. With the money generated being wired directly to the customers’ bank account.
The company is expected to launch more facilities across the country, based on the demand.
