World Energy Storage Day

World Energy Storage Day

Whether it is human energy or natural resources, waste is never a good idea, especially when it is non-renewable. Hence to protect our world from high demand, pollution, and unnecessary expenditure, the concept of energy storage was introduced. As a result, world energy storage day is celebrated annually by stakeholders, think tanks, and conservationists, on the 22nd of September to honor this decision across the globe.

Energy storage and renewable energy are interrelated concepts. In other words, energy storage is advantageous only if the stored energies are renewable in nature. This is why it is important to know the repercussions faced by the companies using non renewable forms of energies.

  • Instead of giving back to society and the environment, the companies with non-renewable models have become a significant reason beyond climate change and air and water pollution. According to the research, the companies are adamant about maintaining their status quo because of their familiarity with non-renewable energy sources- oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy.
  • Coal releases toxic gases into the environment, whereas nuclear energy does not cause any actual harm to nature. However, nuclear power is difficult to harvest and emits radioactive wastes responsible for cancers, bone decay, and blood diseases. On the other hand, petroleum is a dependable and economical energy source, but it also releases super dangerous gases and fumes into the environment.
  • Besides harming the environment and increasing the chances of diseases, the country has witnessed many deaths of workers in coal mines and oil drills as well.

Advantages of renewable sources of energy

  • With the large population of the country and many companies running through different kinds of energies, we all need some sources which are more reliable as well as sustainable. This is where renewable energy comes into the picture. Using hydro, solar, and wind instead of coal, nuclear, and natural gas seems like a good idea in such a situation. Not only are these forms of energy safe but also recyclable, which means there will not be any energy supply shortage in the future.
  • Other than sustainability and reliability, renewable energy sources have proved quite economical. A few years back, coal and gas were considered the cheapest sources. However, with time, wind and solar energy have proved their mettle as the most reasonably priced energies. According to Levelized cost of energy reports, the cost of solar energy has declined sharply by ninety percent and that of wind by seventy one percent; as a result, many companies earlier using coal, gas, geothermal and nuclear have switched to these two renewable (wind & solar) forms.
  • The non-renewable forms of energy are more capital dependent, whereas renewable ones rely more on labor. This opens more job opportunities. Whether it is technicians for wind farms or laborers for installing solar energy, the non-renewable forms of energy create space for workers in the world initially dedicated to capital and machines.
  • Sudden change in the cost of energy like fossil fuels affects the business negatively. On the contrary, the constant price of renewable sources paves the way for a more stable work environment. You can operate solar and wind energies at a meager cost without expecting any sudden increase in the future.

Why is storing renewable energy a big step towards a bright future?

  • No place can rain or shine equally. Some cities in India experience sunshine daily, while towns like Cherrapunji are more about rain. We can store solar energy on sunny days and utilize it whenever needed.
  • Energy storage helps in saving money to a large extent. Renewable energy sources like solar power in place of geysers and heaters consume less power and automatically minimize your electricity bill.
  • Renewable energy can react positively at the time of an urgent need. Energy storage helps in supplying in the moments of mishaps or irregular supplies. For example, the stored energy ensures that the consumers get an uninterrupted electricity supply in the case of power cuts.
  • Last but not least, energy storage makes this world a better place by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. We don’t need pollution-spreading power plants to provide us with electricity. Now we have wind energy, which is not only economical but also environmentally friendly.

Renewable energy and energy storage are two sides of the same coin when it comes to conserving the environment and creating better energy options. A significant surge in renewable energy and energy storage usage has been witnessed recently. Station Energia, Urja Solutions, Vyoma energy, Sungrow and Fluence, and Targray are some of India’s top companies that have adopted energy storage techniques. Indeed, we will come across more success in the future.
