Weaving: The river grass is dried and processed to make it pliable. Then, the artisans skillfully weave it into mats or sheets that form the base of the Thamboolam bags or hamper elements.

Accents: Thin strips of river grass is used as decorative accents by braiding them or incorporating them into patterns on the bags or hampers.

At Kottanz the river grass is likely not dyed and retains its natural earthy look. This aligns with their eco-friendly and sustainable approach.

How We Craft Sustainable Beauty?

The process is rooted in tradition and involves skilled craftsmanship, Mature palm leaves are carefully chosen for their strength and flexibility and then the leaves are thoroughly dried under natural sunlight to remove moisture and prevent mold. They might also be cleaned to remove any impurities. Later dedicated artisans split the dried leaves into thin strips, which are then woven or braided into desired shapes and sizes.

Depending on the product, natural dyes or embellishments might be added for a touch of personalization. The final product is then polished and prepared for use.

Techniques Used

The specific techniques used by our is a closely guarded secret, but some general palm leaf weaving techniques include, Thin strips of palm leaves are coiled and stitched together to create a sturdy base for baskets, boxes, or other objects which is called as coiled weaving. Two or more strips of palm leaves are intertwined to create a flat surface, often used for mats, coasters, or placemats. As simple as braiding but time-consuming and with lots of love, multiple palm leaf strips are braided together to create a decorative and functional element for various products.
