We often heard our parents reminding us to switch off the lights while leaving the room, don’t waste water, or keep the geyser off after fifteen minutes. Have you ever wondered why they said so? Were they worried about the electricity bill only or there was some reason too?
The reality is that they are aware of the fact that unnecessary wastage of energy will make our future unsafe. The more we waste energy, the more the chances that we have to face a large scarcity of energy in the future. Hence, considering the above facts, we celebrate National Energy Conservation Day every year on the 14th of December.
Interesting facts on National Energy Conservation Day
(i) National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on 14th December since 1991 after it was formed under the Union minister of Power
(ii) To recognize and appreciates the efforts of various entities nationwide, awards are distributed every year among 56 subsectors of the country
(iii) With a good amount of effort, the energy sector of the nation is flourishing, and hence doubling of the energy resources is expected by 2030
(iv) The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is in full mode of developing policies that will help us in conserving energy even more
How we can contribute to National Energy Conservation Day
1. Use renewable forms of energy- Renewable sources of energy like wind, solar, hydro, and bio fill up again in a shorter period. And helps in reducing carbon footprint to a large extent.
While non-renewable forms of energy are not only limited but also extremely harmful to the environment. We can encourage our family members and friend circle to use renewable forms of energy (solar and wind) for electricity, water heating, cooling, and even transportation
2. Switch off the appliances instantly after use- We often use appliances like hair dryers, washing machines, ovens, or induction for cooking purposes. However, sometimes we either use the appliance for a longer period or keep it switched even when not in use.
This only leads to unnecessary wastage of energy. Hence, we need to switch off the appliances the moment we are done with our respective tasks.
3. Reduce usage of air conditioners and room heaters- Instead of turning the Air Conditioner or heater on the moment you feel hot or cold is the wrong approach. Try to open up the windows or use a bonfire when you feel hot or cold respectively.
Air Conditioners use refrigerants that emit gases leading to global warming and ozone layer depletion. On the other hand, room heaters not only fetch electricity but also lower the oxygen level of the space thus contributing to more health problems.
4. Go for biodegradable products- The manufacture of biodegradable products consumes less energy in comparison to non-biodegradable products. Production and breaking down of biodegradable products require very less emission of greenhouse gases and fewer fossil fuels.
Hence it is wise to start using biodegradable products from now on. For example, one can start wearing cotton clothes, toothbrushes made of bamboo, use more wooden interiors in your house, etc.
5. Plant trees- Plant at least one tree on this National Energy Conservation day. Trees help lessen cooling and heating costs. As we burn fewer fossil fuels to generate electricity, for heating and cooling purposes, the chances of conserving energy increase more. And we certainly get more oxygen and clean air as a by-product.
6. Educate people- How will you conserve energy if you lack the proper knowledge of the subject? It is our responsibility to spread knowledge on energy conservation to the general public either through seminars, conferences, campaigns, or school events. And to do so, no day can be as suitable as National energy conservation day.
If we understand the concept of this day properly, National Energy conservation day can be one of the most fruitful days of the year. Be it maintaining a sustainable and environmentally friendly nature or taking care of our well-being, National energy conservation day is a suitable day to take steps in the right direction.
Let’s take a pledge on this day to educate our future generations about the significance of the day and safeguard our environment in the best possible ways.
